The ones that no one wanted:
It is down to the final four in the NHL Playoffs, and one thing that is apparent is that we have seen the spotlight shine down on goaltenders. Whether it be Halak for Montreal taking over games, or the surprise play of Michael Leighton of the Flyers, these goaltenders have come from the bottom to take the spotlight.
Jaroslav Halak has taken over these playoffs. He has had a few bumps in the road including his Game 1 loss to Philadelphia, however for the most part he has been superb in net for the Canadiens. He has shut down the likes of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Alexander Ovechkin. He has given us the pleasure to understand what it means to be cool under pressure. In fact, Halak has been even better in games in which he faces more than 40 shots having won almost every game in which this occurs. Halak hopes that his valiant effort will establish his position as the Canadiens #1 net minder by supplanting Carey Price and ending this year after year battle. In my opinion, no goalie in recent years has played this well in the playoffs so in case Montreal’s management has not figured it out yet this guy can play and should be locked up long term. Too bad for Carey Price, a former 1st round draft pick, as both goalies will be restricted free agents this offseason. It is highly unlikely Montreal can sign both, so goodbye Mr. Price.
Across the ice is another goalie who has emerged in these playoffs...the name is Michael Leighton..who?
Michael Leighton of the Philadelphia Flyers is a goaltender who up until now no one really wanted. He has started 112 NHL games, but has bounced around from team to team and promotions and demotions to the minor leagues. Leighton did not even start the playoffs as the Flyers’ #1 goaltender, he got called in when Brian Boucher went down with an injury. Since then he has been stellar, having a 3-0 record, a 1.11 goals-against and a .959 save percentage. That is not what a team usually gets from a backup. The Flyers have been extremely lucky and so has Leighton given that he has been brought into the spotlight and has been able to demonstrate his skill. Leighton hopes that demonstrating he can play will lead to a new contract and an established position in Philly’s line-up. After his shutout in game 1 against Montreal he hopes his great play will continue towards the Stanley Cup. We will have to see if this hot streak continues. Only time will tell, so get your tickets now to the Eastern Conference Finals. Remember, FanXchange has all of your NHL Playoff Tickets so get them now!

A Wild West Battle
NBA Western Conference Final Preview: Los Angeles Lakers vs. Phoenix Suns:
I am ecstatic that Canadian bred, Steve Nash has moved on to the Western Conference Finals. Both the Lakers and Suns had a very easy time in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. They will now meet in what hopes to be a great series for NBA fans, after witnessing both of these teams sweep their opponents in the second round. The Lakers will want to avenge their 2007 loss to the Suns, while the Suns badly want to supplant the defending NBA Champions, and win their own NBA championship for the first time in team history.
The key to this series will be Bigs vs. Bigs. The matchup of Amare Stoudemire and Pau Gasol is a great one, as both of these players have elevated their game in this year’s playoffs. Each player will have a great effect on if their team can survive this series.
Another key component is injuries. Will the eye gash Nash endured in the San Antonio series have an effect on his X-Ray vision? Will he be able to make the eye dropping passes we are so used to? Nash is the NBA’s best pure floor general, he averaged 17.8 points and 9.0 assists in the first two rounds of the playoffs and hopes to continue to flourish for the remainder of these playoffs.
Is Kobe’s age and amount of playing he has done in his career finally catching up with him? He did fine against Utah, but at times he looked tired during the Thunder series. Can Kobe keep pace with the flash and dash that is the Suns offence? Kobe will have to keep pace, as the Lakers lack depth on their bench. This is the X-Factor for the Suns who boast a good bench that will be aided with the return of center Robyn Lopez. Their bench is much better than the Lakers, so if this turns out to be a long series this may spell trouble for the Lakers.
Phoenix has looked very powerful in these playoffs, but come on these are the Lakers. Kobe is the best closer in the game and I doubt that anyone the Suns put on him late in games will be able to contain him when it counts.
Prediction: Lakers in 6

A Ray of Hope
Steve Nash has led the Phoenix Suns to the Western Conference Finals after a 4-0 sweep of the San Antonio Spurs. The Suns have had much trouble in recent years in the playoffs, but due to the 36 year olds excellent play, the Suns are looking like a contender to win the NBA Championship. They are now looking forward to facing off with the winner of the Lakers vs. Jazz series. With the Lakers up 3-0, it seems as though Nash will be facing off against Kobe and the defending champions in the next round.
While most 36 year olds are on the decline of their NBA careers Steve Nash has continued to step up for his team. In the San Antonio series he led the team with 33 points in Game 1 and continued to outdo his opponents throughout the series. This is an amazing outcome, as the 6 foot 3, 180 lbs. point guard has played in 14 NBA seasons against usually much larger competition. He works as hard as any other player, and usually continues to practice well after team practices conclude. He is a determined guy who wants to bring a championship to Phoenix and will do whatever it takes to get there.
His play is not the only thing that brings attention to the Victoria, British Columbia native. Nash is an exemplary person unlike many other famous athletes, such as Ben Roethlisberger and Tiger Woods. He never gets into any trouble and is the leader of the Suns franchise.
Furthermore, Nash gives back to the community through the Steve Nash Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to helping underprivileged children in their health, personal development, education and enjoyment of life. So to all my Canadian NBA fans this is the guy to cheer for! He is Mr. Canada for basketball and should be the man everyone cheers for in the remainder of the NBA Playoffs.

Big step for Canadian Soccer
Major League Soccer (MLS) will welcome the Montreal Impact in the 2012 season. Montreal will become the 3rd Canadian franchise in the league, joining the Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps, who will become a team in 2011. The MLS is very happy with the new franchise, as Montreal already boasts a huge soccer fan base and it will allow the MLS to truly become a North American league.
With 3 teams in Canada it is beginning to show that because of our multicultural society, Canada is a country with a great number of soccer enthusiasts. Growing up more and more children are being exposed to soccer through house leagues and now can watch major league teams in their own marketplace. The move to Montreal will also allow Toronto FC to have a major rival in the MLS.
Toronto FC continues to be Canada’s team at the present so come out and support your team.

Will he stay or will he go?
Chris Bosh was the face of the franchise for the Toronto Raptors. After finishing the season in 9th place, and out of the playoffs, Bosh was left in a state of distress. He is committed to winning and was not very pleased when his team could not even finish in a playoff seeding. This summer the Raptor star is a free agent. The Raptors would love to re-sign him and give him the maximum contract he deserves, however he is still undecided on what his plan will be for next season.
The fact is that it looks likely the star will be on his way out of town. He was very displeased with his Raptors teammates down the stretch and ended up using his Twitter account to say, “Been wanting to ask. Where should I go next season and why?" An hour later he then recounted saying, “Ok... Let me rephrase the question. Should I stay or should I go?" Even though, the second tweet gives the thought that he may stay in Toronto it is very unlikely. Bosh feels that the Raptors lack depth and he wishes to pursue an NBA Championship. Without some key acquisitions in the offseason Bosh is gone. Given that GM Brian Colangelo committed over $100 million last year to Andrea Bargnani and Hedo Turkoglu over the next 5 years, the Raptors will have to go over the luxury tax threshold in order to attract any additional free agents. This seems unlikely given past spending patterns of the franchise.
Furthermore, Bosh recently updated his Twitter account’s biography by removing his status claiming to be the Raptor’s captain. All I have to say is goodbye CB4, and that he is yet another basketball star on his way out of town. My thoughts are that he will end up in Houston or Chicago. However, it is up to him not me, but I would like to thank him for his time in Toronto. He always gave his best, and was committed to winning for the Raptors up until now. All I can hope now is that Toronto is able to sign one of the many free agents in this summer’s class. What are your thoughts Raptor fans?

Team FanXchange Gives Back…
Hey Fans,
From May 6-8, 2010 Team FanXchange staff members will be participating in the Scotiabank Pro-Am Hockey Tournament. This tournament raises funds to help support research and care in Alzheimer's and related disorders. FanXchange is an opportunistic company that loves to give back to the community. We have taken the opportunity of sponsoring a team for this event in hopes of contributing significantly to the cause.
The tournament provides an opportunity for hockey enthusiasts to team up with former NHL greats in the battle against these devastating diseases. Baycrest is an internationally renowned academic health sciences centre with a focus on the aging brain. Therefore, in partnering with such an organization FanXchange realizes the potential of what their contribution will do for those suffering from Alzheimer’s.
FanXchange set the bar high with an initial fundraising goal of $25,000 but as expected, Team FanXchange went above and beyond and is extremely excited to announce that we have raised over $48,000 for this amazing cause.
Tomorrow, the fun begins with draft night, The more money each team raised the higher their draft pick. Each team gets to draft an NHL Alumni based on the order of how they finished in their fundraising efforts. The NHL Alumni player that is drafted will play on our team for the duration of the tournament. Out of 60 teams, FanXchange is looking at a 14th or 15th pick in the draft (meaning FanXchange finished in the top 15 out of 60). Some of the NHL Alumni being drafted include, Doug Gilmour, Wendel Clark, Guy Lafleur, Gary Leeman, Darryl Sittler, and Gary Roberts to name a few.
Team FanXchange begins play on Friday in the actual tournament with the hopes of winning the Gold!

Some Canadian Hope?
I am very pleased that 2 Canadian teams remain in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. There has not been a Canadian winner in the Stanley Cup since 1993 when the Canadiens defeated the Kings. This is a crazy thought given that Canada is the hockey nation and comprises the majority of NHL fans. In fact, this year CBC has gotten almost 1.3 million viewers for each playoff game, while the Versus Network in the United States has had 543,000 viewers per game. Canada has a population of just over 30 million, while the United States has a population of over 300 million, yet still we have more viewers in our proud nation.
Canada only makes up 6 of the 30 NHL teams, however does that not mean we should win a cup every 5 years? Our proud nation boasts several World Junior, and Olympic Gold medals during this time, but the fact remains that we need a cup to come home to Canada! Montreal and Vancouver are the 2 Canadian teams left in these playoffs, so as a nation we should support their effort.
The Stanley Cup is Canada’ Superbowl. It is a historical trophy that dates all the way back to 1892! For the last 118 years the Stanley Cup has stood as the symbol of hockey supremacy. It is just under 3-feet tall and 34.5 pounds. It is no easy task to get it, as teams have to endure an 82-game season, and win 16 grueling playoff games. This is what makes it even more gratifying to finally have the chance to lift the Cup over your head in victory. So, I like most Canadians would love to see a member of the Montreal Canadiens or Vancouver Canucks lift what should be a Canadian possession over their heads this spring.
In order to help them get there, support is needed. Log onto FanXchange.com and buy your Habs and Canucks playoff tickets now! They are going quickly and we need the extra patriotic support!
